Special Applications

Silicon carbide is used in several specific electro-technical applications such as autovalves and resistance, traditional mechanical fields such as non-slip floors and a number of new technologies such as special ceramics that are used to line the space shuttle and components such as brake disks with an indefinite lifespan. 

Sublime’s Silicon Carbide lends itself to a growing field of technical applications and is keen to develop technical partnerships for innovative applications.

Abrasives

Hard and sharp silicon carbide is the first choice raw material for bonded, coated and granular abrasive applications, including wire sawing, abrasive blasting and etching.  Its high resistance to wear also makes Silicon Carbide an ideal material for manufacturing abrasive resistant pipe, impellers, pumping chambers and other high wear parts.  Its wear resistance (abrasiveness) is 5-20 times than that of cast iron and rubber.

Sublime’s premium crystalline Silicon Carbide is crushed and screened to FEPA macro grit sizes from F12 to F200.  Micro grit processing is planned for the future .

Refractory

Because of its high temperature and abrasive resistance it is used to make refractories for furnaces and other high temperature components. The ceramic industry is one of the largest users of Silicon Carbide refractory products supplied by Sublime with reliable and consistent quality.

Sublime’s premium Crystalline grade product (>97% SiC) is used predominantly for refractory applications where high tolerance is required.  High grade Carbosil (90% SiC) is also supplied for applications where lower tolerances are specified.

Metallurgical

Silicon carbide is used for the de-oxidation and re-carburation of cast iron and steel in foundries. Metallurgical grade Silicon Carbide grain is a unique material for use in the production of iron and steel.  It is used in the foundry industry for electric furnace production of gray, ductile, and malleable iron.  It is an excellent source of carbon and silicon, promoting nucleation and rendering the iron more responsive to inoculation, deoxidizing the iron, which enhances furnace lining life. Silicon carbide can also be used to enhance efficiency in ferroalloy production using the patented Maxred process developed by Sublime Technologies. Products are custom formulated and sized to client specifications.

Sublime offers Four standard Grade products:

     
  • Premium Grade Metallurgical >97% SiC (Crystalline)

  • High Grade Metallurgical 88-92% SiC (Carbosil)
  •  
  • Medium Grade Metallurgical 82-88% SiC (SubSiC85)

As with higher grade materials, SubSiC85 is also used as a deoxidising agent in LD/BOF/ladle furnaces.  More recent applications for SubSiC include the patented MaxRed process developed in South Africa for the Ferro Alloys industry.
